I come home from school and a few hours later it’s pitch black. Why is it so dark at 5:00? Oh yeah, it has to be fall.  There are a lot of things about fall that I like; falling leaves, fresh apples, the annual corn maze and pumpkin patch, Halloween, and of course, turkey dinners.

Walking home from school, I see the last of the majestic leaves grasping to branches so they don’t fall. Heading into our complex, I have a leaf war with my sister.  I pick up the largest armful I can and dump them over her head.  Later, while delivering papers, I crunch my way through the scattered leaves littering the ground, always looking for the biggest one.

Fall is also harvest time.  That means the apples are ripe from the tree, the light glistening off their vibrant skins.  Oma, my great grandmother, uses the fresh apples to bake the most delicious cinnamon scented pies.  Leftover apples get peeled, chopped and cooked into homemade applesauce.

Arriving at the corn maze, I can see excited families waiting to get lost in the 2 meter tall corn field.  Before we go in for our turn, my friends and I play on the steep slide.  Flashlights in hand, we are ready to head in, hoping to not get lost.  After successfully solving the maze, we warm up by the crackling fire and roast hot dogs and marshmallows.

Going to the pumpkin patch, I can see a sea of orange balls with green seaweed tangled all around.  My brothers and I have a competition to find the biggest pumpkin.  Finding a giant one, I have to call my dad to carry it for me because I can’t lift it.   After heading home with our finds in the back, the car will smell like pumpkin for weeks.

Orange guts splattered everywhere, I carve a funny face into the side of my pumpkin.  Now that my jack o’lantern has come to life with a glowing candle inside, I can put it on the front steps, ready for Halloween.  We buy only one bag of candy since we don’t get very many trick or treaters at our doorstep.  But that doesn’t stop me from going door to door in the neighbourhood, asking for candy.

There’s finally a deal for turkey, so mom takes me along to search for one that is as close to 20 pounds as possible.  With all her other shopping, the turkey ends up being free.  I can’t  wait til I can get my hands on a massive bowl of mouth watering stuffing once the bird is cooked.  Almost all of the turkey will be eaten by the end of the meal.

My very favorite thing about  fall is when it ends.  That means Christmas is around the corner!
